Program Associate (Part-Time)


Organizational Mission
The mission of the Naco Heritage Alliance is to reveal the hidden stories of human experience in the Borderlands by engaging communities, preserving the past, and educating the world as stewards of Camp Naco.

Position Summary
The Program Associate will support day‑to‑day operations by managing logistics for events and programs, coordinating and supporting volunteers, and supervising the Fellowship program. This role is critical to ensuring smooth, mission‑driven program delivery and strong volunteer engagement.

Position Details
  • Employment Type: Part‑time (approx. 20 hrs/week), Schedule Flexible, with some evenings/weekends for events
  • Location: Bisbee/Naco, AZ
  • Reports To: Executive Director
  • Compensation: $17–20/hr depending on qualifications


Primary Responsibilities
  1. Program & Event Logistics
    ○ Coordinate all logistical aspects of programs, workshops, field visits, and events (venue and speaker booking, supply procurement, onsite setup).
    ○ Create and maintain detailed schedules, agendas, and communication materials as needed in collaboration with the communications team.
    ○ Provide onsite event support, manage technology setups, and coordinate with staff and partners.
  2. Volunteer Coordination
    ○ Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise volunteers for events and regular programs.
    ○ Maintain accurate volunteer records, monitor hours, and implement recognition strategies.
    ○ Act as the primary point of contact for volunteers, offering guidance and support to volunteer teams.
  3. Fellowship Program Supervision
    ○ Manage scheduling and communication with Fellowship applicants and alumni.
    ○ Facilitate Fellows’ integration into programming and ensure alignment with organizational mission.
    ○ Monitor project timelines, collect documentation of Fellowship activities, and prepare brief status reports.
  4. Operational & Administrative Support
    ○ Draft communications to promote programs – content for emails, newsletters, social media posts.
    ○ Maintain databases for events, volunteers, Fellows, and contacts; ensure data integrity.
    ○ Support general office tasks: responding to inquiries, ordering supplies, organizing meetings as needed.
  5. Other Duties as Assigned
    ○ Travel as needed. Most travel will be in the Bisbee area, Cochise County, or Southern Arizona. Travel outside the immediate area will generally be able to be scheduled in advance.
    ○ Attend meetings with staff and various advisory groups.

Qualifications
  • Education & Experience
    ○ Demonstrable experience and/or education to manage projects and work with people of different backgrounds.
  • Skills & Competencies
    ○ Exceptional organizational, multitasking, and time‑management skills.
    ○ Excellent written and verbal communication.
    ○ Comfortable with program/event coordination, database management, and tech tools, including but not limited to facilitating virtual programming
    ○ Experience with volunteer coordination best practices.
    ○ Project Management Software (Such as Monday.com)
    ○ Google Suite/Microsoft Office
    ○ Ability to travel in Southern Arizona as needed
    ○ Familiarity with humanities and social sciences of the borderlands is preferred.
    ○ Bilingual - English/Spanish strongly preferred

About The Speaker Dr. Laura Hooton is an Assistant Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the History Department at New Mexico State University. She teaches and writes about African American history, borderlands history, migration and immigration, and social movements and civil rights. She is the co-author of Almost All Aliens: Immigration, Race, and Colonialism in American History and Identity , Second Edition. Her next book, Little Liberia: A Dream of Black Freedom in the US-Mexico Borderlands , will be published this year.

Learn about the prehistoric residents of our region from the earliest residents who hunted now extinct mammoths through the first indigenous peoples who encountered explorers from Spain and the United States. January 23 - La Frontera: A History of Our Border Region Cochise County has always been a borderlands. From prehistoric times the mountains and valleys of the sky islands have been corridors for explorations and conquest. The first Spanish explorers traveled these pathways in the 16th Century. Mexico's battles for independence and then in revolution often focused on this northern frontier. The westward push for gold and Manifest Destiny established the current line. Learn how these stories still resonate and shape today's borderline. January 30 - A History of Conflict: Camp Naco, the Bisbee Deportation and World War I Our small section of the US-Mexico border has been the focus of major military and civil conflicts in the early 20th Century. Learn how the stories of these people and events intertwined in this small region of Cochise County and how work continues int he present to preserve this history.
